What's Up With The Steeple?

This question is posed by one of my boys. Why do churches have steeples? I know I could look it up, just figured some of you quick witted brethren might have fun with this one.

Where else would you put the bell?
The bell was used to announce the time of worship. So locically it would be the highest point of the building. Then someone thought, "Hey we should put a cross up there to be an invitation for all to come and worship."

Internet sources reveal quite an unusual origin for steeples (much unreliable material there.

I think it all began when I was 3 years old or so. My mom put my hands together and made some funny signs with them. "Here is the church, and here is the steeple. Open up the doors and there's all the people."

I think we need big neon signs atop our Churches with a flashing sign reading, "One Way To Heaven" and a big arrow pointing up. Oh wait that was done on the Apostle with Robert Duval.

The steeple helps to identify a building as a Church...it also points to Heaven and helps to decorate the house of God!

We don't have one by the way and we look like a Church because our sign in front says, "White Rock Missionary Baptist Church"

Big J, you forgot "Nursery Provided" on your sign...
I thought the steeple was to be removed by little kids as they put in their coins for the penny march.

Maybe we copied it from the Catholics, they had all the money in the dark ages, we were hiding in houses and caves.
What is a church building supposed to look like?
Steeples, stained-glass?
Our buildings are just patterned after a culture of buildings from years gone by...

Hello Brothers,
Hey Big J (I really hate using the adjective Big in your name)
If you put a sign that reads "One Way to heaven" can you put a sign that says "Reject Jesus and you will go to "hell" ooops I blogged the bad word
